Hello!

For those who’re worrying.. (hahaha) I’ve reached HK safe and sound! Quite an adventure to travel on my own, heh. Thanks for the call merlion!

Whoo hi, blogging from godfather’s house tonight. Gonna fetch the others (Liwen, Mae, Yixi, and Janson on Mon) at the airport tomorrow. I can’t wait! Big com screen, nice view, comfortable weather, plus a really cool 5 days spent with my squadmates here. What more can I ask for? :)

It’ll probably be long before the next time I can be online, so it’s another hiatus. Cya’ll soon!

P.S. I am genuinely feeling very happy now, I hope you are too. Whoever you are, reading this. :)

Haribo

I don’t understand why Dad always says I’m going to play when I’m going to school. And when I am really going to play, he says I’m always spending. When there’re things that go wrong he always says “…because you’re a girl, how can you be like that?”

Lol. And I have to shut up and let it pass. I am always in the fault. Always, even when I improve in my grades, even when I win something in SJ, even when I’ve finished my tuition homework, even when I tell you I don’t need that extra money, even when I want to try to play Toccata well, even when I’ve cleared my room and cleaned the house, there’s always something you’d be unhappy with.

I don’t like feeling this way.

I’m going back.
No, you shouldn’t. You can’t.

Thought all’s well. Thought I’d be okay already. Thought I’d never cry over you again.

Then my world came crashing down.

Doubleyoueepee (long post ahead!)

Yay I’m back. Work Experience Programme was greatt! I personally think I benefitted a lot, be it gaining insights into the healthcare industry or just making friends. Whoo, shall do this summary to describe what I did/observe over the last 3 days. But frankly, the experience’s really 非笔墨能形容的 :)

Day One 17/11

Dad fetched Zhikang and I to NUH so we were rather early, reached about 1 hour in advance. When everyone reached we headed to the admin office to get our paperwork done and we got our cool name tags. Caitlin and Kerry-Ann from AIS are much taller than us although they’re 1 year younger ._. After some short introduction by NUH nursing director Lilian off we went to the wards! I was really excited :)

I was attached to ward 58 on the first day. It’s one specialised in Oncology and Neurology. Sister brought me around the Neurology part to look at different equipment and facilities in the ward.. Woah I must say that technology as intervened so much in healthcare nowadays. Even medication is dispensed by machines :o

I didn’t really talk much to the staff there at first because I was still quite shy. But later on I got bored so I chatted with the nurses about their workload and stuff. Nursing seems fun but stressful at the same time. One of them let me try the sp02 thing. Sounds cheem? It’s actually that thing in hospital with the red light, kiapped on the index finger :)

Later on I (kind of) camped at the physiotherapy room where I talked to Yih Ling (not sure if I got the spelling right!) about her job. Later on a few of her patients came in for their physio session. It’s kind of interesting how the different exercises train/test different parts of the body. It really requires lots of observation and motivational skills to be a physiotherapist.

After lunch I was attached to the same ward but to a different ward sister. At the Oncology part of the ward, I observed this intercostal chest drain where water accumulated in the pleural cavity is drained out. Leaving the water there will cause difficulty in breathing even in simple daily activities like walking. I always thought that chemotherapy was a painflu process but actually it isn’t so, in fact it is the side effects that are painful. The process itself is just like taking normal medication, by the oral route, etc.

I am so proud of myself! I conversed with this patient Uncle Zali in malay! I am super surprised I could understand his native malay slang and shortforms, and can even have a funny conversation with him.

Oh. I always thought the checking of 5 rights in oral medication procedure was a kinda for-show thing. But they really do check it in the ward. There are 10 actually, but the 5 we learn in SJAB are the main and more important ones :) They help change the patients’ positions every 2 hours, not enough manpower for 30mins :D

Day Two 18/11

Yay yay this is one day I looked forward to so much. I was attached to a paediatric ward! Kids are cool heh.

Although the kids are bubbly, lovable, whatever, it was a bit sad to be there too seeing how the kids have to endure through such ordeals at a young age. Some of them there, in fact quite a big number, suffered from child abuse and were there for in-house protection kind of thing.

There was this indian 8-year-old girl Nadia who was one of them. She’s a lovely girl and I had fun singing songs, drawing, playing, watching cartoons with her. Aw she kissed me when I left! Syed is a 10-year-old malay boy on the bed next to Nadia’s, who is there because of his worsened Asthma condition. I can’t help but smile when I look at them play :)

While the nurses were doing a dressing simple wound procedure I went in to observe. Supported the patient too :) She’s a Commonwealth Secondary School student, currently in secondary 3. It was quite nice talking to her because we had many common topics. She has a sad story too though :/ But I’m glad she’s discharged already. Hope you’re fine!

Yeah hm then again I was talking to a few ITE Nursing students. I was curious why they chose nursing because nursing wasn’t common for guys, and there are many other choices even for the girls. Whoo, they chose it becuase it is their interest! One of them even chose it despite living at CCK. Only ITE college East (and I think somewhere else?) offers this course. All the best to your studies!

I saw Sir Jianli and his medicine friends there too! They were having tutorials there or something, such a coincidence :) Sir Jianli talked to me about Medicine life.. Hm really rather hectic. But yeah I have 3 more years to think what I want to study. I’m interested in interior design :D Okay I’m digressing. Yeah his friends are really nice! They initiated conversations with me and Kelvin and Joanne also brought me in with them to do their assessments on patients. I learnt quite a bit :) Theresa left her contact for me too!

At the end of the day there was a sharing among the 7 nursing attachment students at the discharge lounge together with Shirley. Everybody had cool stories to tell :D

Day Three 19/11

It’s my last day there in NUH! In the morning I thought to myself that I must end this attachment on a complete and nice note. I can safely say that I accomplished it!

I was attached to ward 64! I was the only one at the 6th floor over the 3 days :o There were a mix of patients there ranging from cardiology to rheumatology and so on. I still had a lot of fun under the guidance of Senior Staff Nurse Shikin. She’s 31 years old this year, married with 2 children but she has a heart of an 18-year-old! She’s really funny and cute :)

Upon knowing I was from SJAB she challenged me to make a bed. Heh I did awesome and she was impressed! Wow :D

I saw two :O procedures at ward 64, lumbar puncture and knee puncture. Firstly the patient was placed in a curled up position. Then, the area around the lumbar spine was prepared using aseptic techniques. The doctor located the appropriate location and injected local anaesthetic to numb the area. She did this cool tilting-the-needle-at-suitable-angles thing so the anaesthetic is spread around the whole area. She used a manometer to measure pressure! Interesting eh :) After that, the cerebralspinal fluid was collected dropwise and put into containers before sending to other departments for further investigation. The process looked painful ://

The knee puncture is more or less similar, just that it is at the knee and the liquid collect is thick and dark yellow in colour. Looks pretty gross as a matter of fact. Don’t worry though, it will only be present if you have an inflammation :)

After that I walked around to different wards I went to to take photos with the nurses who helped me in one way or another. When I went back to ward 47 (the paediatric one) Nadia didn’t want me to go until I said I needed to eat because I was hungry. She only allowed me to go when I said I was hungry and needed to eat. Aww.

Off to class outing after that :)

Lastly..
I think overall the attachment has provided me with lots of exposure to the healthcare industry. Now I have a clearer idea of doctors and nurses’ jobs heh. I’ve picked up some skills here and there, be it inter-personal or procedure-wise. I am glad I am able to use my own skills to aid myself to learn more through this attachment too, like malay and home nursing! Friendships were also forged between the Dunman High and Australian International School students :) Most importantly, I have found where my passion lies :)) WEP was great!

Word count: 1329!

Sorry Chong :D

Stomp

Nice to see dunmanians defend DHS, but some just ruined the image of the school. :/

I can’t explain how I’m feeling now. It’s like sadness with a tinge of disappointment, for I don’t know what. No I shouldn’t feel this way, I can’t. I must get myself out of this..

Yesterday was a good day though. A seemingly short but long day out with 4B. We reached Sentosa in the morning and played volleyball at Siloso beach against a few funny people hahaha. Time passed really quickly and before we knew it it was like 4 plus already. Packed up and left Sentosa for Mind Cafe. Underwater World on our next visit! :)

Alighted at Clarke Quay MRT and tried to find our way to 68 Boat Quay. Quoting Qiqian, we went on an adventure! Found our way there in the end, woah sense of accomplishment :D Mind Cafe was retarded like usual, shouldn’t have wasted our time on the “games that need brain”. Dinosaur bone game and Ugly doll were fun! Oh the food at Mind Cafe was not bad too. Of course, not forgetting the funny waiter with black nails, Qiqian being kiasu and his salt thingy, Liwen who spams words, Cynthia who can’t stop laughing.. Lol!

On the way back I felt a bit emo. Same place, same rainy night, but without who I most wanted to be with.

Shall upload the photos for yesterday now. And I’m going to do chinese homework later. I hope I can finish. :)

Back (front left right)

It’s been a while since the last post. Hm for the past 6 days I was kept busy but I had a lot of fun :) I went to FCBC on Sunday with Liwen and Cass, had a mini impromptu PEA gathering at Stephen’s house and celebrated Kaili’s 18th birthday at some steamboat place near Bugis Junction. I played ball in school today too.

Okay I’m getting really pissed now because Facebook photo upload always fails on me. I shall try out Picasa since Mr Lim recommended it the other time.

Right something just happened at home making me not want to blog anymore. And the worst thing is someone had to rub it in and make things worse.

I really hate how I’m feeling right now. I need You.
